Facing the harsh reality that I am a consumer whore

Did you know there's a huge mass of garbage just floating in the middle of the Pacific? It stays there and accumulates because of the flow of ocean currents. There are dozens of these huge garbage patches all around the world.

I didn't know this until recently. Now, every time I throw something in the garbage, especially if it's plastic, I feel guilty.

I feel this guilt because I know in the back of my mind there's no real plan for this garbage. The city just takes it, trucks it off and chucks it somewhere. Does it get burnt? Buried? Sorted and recycled? I honestly have no idea.

The city of Vancouver has a goal of becoming the world's greenest city by 2020, a goal well within it's means considering it has topped many quality of life surveys again and again. It also has a great web resource to help citizens sorting their trash.

I'm not trying to preach environmentalism or anything, but I do recognize that continuing down this path of constantly buying and throwing away is not a sustainable option. A new generation of kids are being indoctrinated with this concept early on, which is great. Hopefully my grandchildren, if I have any, will treat the planet better than I do.
